Epson is Revolutionizing Fabric Printing at NYFW

In a warehouse tucked away in the Meatpacking District of New York, DJ Leigh Lezark spun Bruno Mars and Solange, women in white lab coats hooked syringes up to guests’ arms, and models wore all-over-print garments. This was the office supply company, Epson’s, launch party for their new, improved, and user friendly fabric printer.

The machine was as large as a motorcycle chassis and was being manned by Todd Schneider, Epson printer dealer trainer. Schneider explained the process to Quartz, saying, “The printer works by essentially applying a giant iron-on transfer, which is heat-pressed into fabric in a process called dye sublimation.”

Epson is hoping to attract high fashion designers to their new machine that costs $20,000 by making fabric printing easy and accessible. The problem with the printer is that it’s only capable of printing on polyester. Designers that work with cotton, leather, or silk are out of luck until further notice.
