70s Icon Joni Mitchell is the Latest Unconventional ‘It’ Girl

New York Magazine’s annual fashion issues just names Joni Mitchell as spring’s new muse, and we can’t say we’re surprised. Aside from making headlines about dishing on Taylor Swift and being the fashion icon of the 70s, Mitchell is the latest to be cast in the fashion industry’s effort to portray real women. Hot on the heels of Joan Didion’s campaign for Céline and Ashley Graham being the first plus-sized model to be featured in Sports Illustrated––it’s official––spring is the season for change and a much needed reality check.

Joni Mitchell was very much a tastemaker in both music and fashion in the 70s, and it appears with the decade’s revival this season, that Mitchell is making a comeback too. Mitchell appears on the cover of New York Magazine’s fashion issue in a Stevie Nicks-esque pose and wears a stunning, all-white Lanvin dress. This cover is only the latest in Mitchell’s comeback however; the singer also appears in this season’s YSL campaign with her guitar and an on trend floppy hat.

In addition to taking the fashion world by storm, Mitchell has been making headlines for refusing to cast Taylor Swift in her biopic. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mitchell said, “‘I've never heard Taylor's music [...] I've seen her. Physically, she looks similarly small-hipped and high cheekbones. I can see why they cast her. I don't know what her music sounds like, but I do know this — that if she's going to sing and play me, good luck.’”

New York Magazine’s choice for covergirl depicts one of this season’s biggest trends––and no, we’re not talking flared jeans and florals. The fashion industry's landscape has been undergoing a rapid restructuring over the last year by casting unexpected, but just as gorgeous, models. Tall and rail thin is no longer the standard of beauty and this is one trend we hope is here to stay.
